Coruisk House started life as a small single storey thatched croft house in the crofting and fishing community of Elgol. The village itself dates back certainly to Viking times and probably long before. The original meaning of the name Elgol is lost in the mists of time - one possibility is The Noble Dale.
The Strathaird Peninsula on which Elgol stands, is the traditional clan land of the Mackinnons - aides to the fleeing Bonnie Prince Charlie, who left Scotland for the last time shortly after leaving his hiding place in Elgol on 4th July 1746.
Around 1900 the family at Coruisk started to take in travellers, who at the time were a mixture of climbers, writers, artist's etc. - largely from the middle and upper classes. Coruisk Boarding House as it became known, was famous for its hospitality and fresh highland food. First an extra storey was added followed by an extension, including a large dining room and, in its heyday, sixteen guests were accommodated - all sat and ate together at one large oak dining table.
When we bought Coruisk House in 1997 it had not been used for many years and much restoration was needed. We have retained as much as possible of the original features of the house whilst adding modern necessities like extra bathrooms. Both dining room and guest lounge have wood burning stoves. Many artifacts decorate the house from all over the world.
All bedrooms are en-suite or have their own bathrooms, and have tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryers, etc. There is a large conservatory for breakfast and a cosy dining room.
